Dermatology

Historically, Cambridge has always included small animal dermatology as part of the small animal medicine service. This integrated approach offers significant advantages as so many medical cases present with dermatological signs.

Services offered include

Video otoscopy
Onsite CT and MRI for aural investigations
Intradermal skin testing
Photodynamic therapy
Free telephone and email advice

The dermatology service is headed by Mike Herrtage, a RCVS Diploma holder in dermatology, and Mark Reading, who holds the RCVS Certificate in dermatology.

Clinical Case

This cat was referred for the investigation of a severe, progressive, ulcerative facial dermatosis with accompanying keratitis and serosanguinous nasal discharge. Feline herpes virus-1 (FHV-1) infection was suspected and FHV-1 DNA was detected in all tissue areas that were sampled. Skin biopsies failed to detect any FHV-1 inclusions. A useful tip to assist in the diagnosis of this condition would be to take a number of biopsies concentrating on the epithelial edge of the lesion rather than the more ulcerated areas. The cat is pictured before and after completion of a 3 week course of oral famciclovir.

Surgical correction of stenotic nares.
